It threatens entire ecosystems, social stability, and the economic future. And it is directly linked to one of the biggest problems of our time: energy supply. Electricity and heat generation are responsible for around 40% of energy-related CO₂ emissions. If we want to combat climate change effectively, this is where we need to start.
Why we need new solutions
Despite the growth of renewable energies, the global electricity supply remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Coal, gas, and oil provide a reliable source of energy, but they are also responsible for billions of tons of CO₂ emissions each year and thus for a large part of global warming.
Solar and wind power plants are on the rise in many countries, but they too have their limitations: they are weather-dependent, do not always generate electricity when it is needed, and make the grid vulnerable to fluctuations. Storage solutions are expensive and often not yet technologically scalable.
The result is an energy system that is out of balance – at precisely the moment when reliability is crucial. The energy transition therefore needs more than existing technologies. It needs new systems that generate reliable, CO₂-free electricity around the clock, regardless of weather or location, without the use of fossil fuels.
